A surprise summer signing that split opinion amongst the Barcelona fan base, Paulinho has nevertheless settled in well and is happy to do the hard yards in order to help get the best out of Lionel Messi.
The Brazilian’s impact has been immediate and he could make his Champions League debut against Olympiacos on Wednesday.
“Playing with Messi is already a special thing,” Paulinho said to reporters at his pre-match press conference.
“It’s a privilege to run for him, so he can show his quality, he’s amazing.”
Paulinho’s adaptation to Barcelona’s style has surprised a lot of people but not the player himself.
“I always played in the position I do here,” he continued.
“I have freedom both here and in the national team, I can reach the goal and give assists…
“It’s my role and my characteristic and I will do everything possible to help my colleagues.
“There was mistrust when I arrived, but I had the support of the people who decided on my signing.
“It was difficult in my debut as a starter, but now, with the help of my teammates, I am sure that I can improve.”
Making his debut in the premier European football competition clearly excites the Brazilian.
“I have to make the most of it because opportunities in life do not always show up,” he said.
“The Champions League delights me more than any other competition in the world.
